My initial career plans were to become a graphic designer and to work my way up to a senior position as an art director. I wanted to use my degree from UNC-Chapel Hill (B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication - Graphic Design) to educate people through visual means. After working in the design world, I figured out that my passion really laid in educating people. I realized that I wanted to use my skills as a hobby rather than a career.

As a result, I decided to get a job in the education field. Over the past five years, I have gained experience working for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ Central Office and UNC-Chapel Hill. During these years, I began to realize that I enjoyed the one-on-one interaction I received with the students, and I gained a sense of fulfillment whenever I helped them reach their goal(s).

It wasn’t long before I decided to enroll into the M.Ed. for School Counseling program at NC State. After taking my required entry courses, I then obtained my practicum placement at East Clayton Elementary in Clayton, NC. For my year-long internship, I chose to stay at this location. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this school because there was always a teachable moment. I was either involved in individual counseling, small groups, classroom guidance lessons, or supporting the school however I could.

I’ve come a long way from that eager undergraduate student who wanted to fill the world with her designs, but I’m excited to have stumbled onto this new career path. I’m now ready to fill young hearts and minds with love, hope, and direction.

I’m originally from Wilson, NC and am the oldest of four siblings (two brothers and two sisters). I also have a Yorkie named Milo. Although I am no longer working in the design world, I still have a passion for graphic design. I also enjoy reading, watching movies, spending time with my family and friends, and travelling. I will receive my M.Ed. in School Counseling in May 2018. I hope to specifically work in an elementary school upon graduation.
